The Music Capsule: Artist’s Statement

Artist Statement

I have entitled this collection of jackets “The Music Capsule”. I chose my favorite artists, bands, songs and albums whose music and lyrics play a big role in my life.

My musical playlists chronicle my path through the widest extremes. The music reminds me of the journey back to balance. It's not about picking my favorite genres of music. It's about music of all genres supporting me through life’s adventures.

Just like how the artist's work shows their creative personality and reflects their journey, the playlists and songs that we hold close are a part of our creative personality. Those songs are like a visual snapshot of our life’s work and who we are. All of the different songs, artists and album collections I've connected with over the years have beautifully and abstractly painted my journey.

I created each unique piece in this collection inspired by the feelings I experienced as I let the music take me where I needed to go. I deeply enjoyed my time searching for the colors, the feel of the fabrics, and the energy that each article of clothing brought to me.

Music is very much the essence and collection of us. Each Repurposed jacket contains so much unique personality. Every jacket or shirt embodies the essence of a song, an album or an artist. I see colors and abstract designs when I listen to music. Consequently, I decided to create small color studies as I listened to the music on loop, which helped me connect the colors and patterns of the fabrics with the sounds of the music. As I searched for garments in vintage thrift stores,  some of the matches surprised me as they came together in interesting ways. My process was much like how I view the process of songs and creative albums coming together in layers and textures.

The pieces in this collection are named after some of my favorite artists’ work, such as Norwegian Wood by the Beatles, Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen, Sugar Sugar by the Archies, Sugar Magnolia By The Grateful Dead, Peace Train By Cat Stevens, Wildflowers Kings Highway and Mary Jane’s Last Dance by Tom Petty. These artists are very inspirational to me. Their music, which often tells the story of their lives, has helped me through phases of my own life. We are deeply linked and a love for the artists and their music will always be there!

I hope you appreciate the power in the language and energy of the music revealed in this collection. Please enjoy the playlist that inspired this collection.
